What is Remapping and How does it work?
Here you will learn exactly that, as well as the differences in the Types of Remaps and Services we offer.
Our MWR Performance Power Remap’s are developed with the key aim in achieving the highest BHP and Torque that your vehicle can safely handle, resulting in powerful as well as reliable performance.
Our Economy Remaps are developed with the key aim of achieving the highest MPG! Our Economy Remap will have dramatic impact on increasing fuel efficiency, as well as an overall gain in BHP and Torque.
Our Blend or Combination Remap has been developed to get the best of both worlds, incorporating Power, Torque and MPG in one map. A favourite for Turbo-Diesel vehicles that cover the milage but still desire that Power.
DPF and EGR solutions can be incorporated into any of our ECU Remaps. The physical removal of the DPF and delete of EGR requires the corresponding software adaptions in order for the vehicle to run properly.
Some of the most common questions we receive are ‘What is Remapping?’ and ‘How does it work?’ The Answer to both of these questions lies in first explaining what a vehicles ECU is and how it works. An ECU or Electronic Control Unit is most easily described as the brain of post 1997 vehicles. Its computer processor analyses the cars current state from various sensors as well as the what the driver is commanding the car to do. From that information it finds a balance between Economy, Performance and Emission Control, delivering engine power and torque accordingly. This therefore means essentially that the car is programmed to only create certain amounts of power, torque and emissions at any one time. This programming is known as the vehicles ‘Map’.
With specialist tools, we therefore have the opportunity to change the vehicles ‘Map’, a process more commonly known as ‘Remap’. By doing so, the engine is tuned to be more efficient, resulting in power and torque as well as economy gains, with overall improvements to performance in areas such as throttle response.
So how does remapping work? And why don’t manufactures tune vehicles to be efficient from factory? Well the simple answer is that they do. A good example of this is the Volkswagen Transporter T5.1, where the same 2.0TDI engine is offered on 4 performance platforms : 83bhp, 102bhp, 114bhp, 140bhp. The only difference between these models mechanically is the ECU mapping, however, the difference in performance allows dealerships to charge huge differences in price tag. As can be seen here, the VW T5.1 models can all achieve 175bhp comfortably, whilst also seeing an MPG increase with our Hybrid Remap.
As well as this, when developing a vehicle the manufacturers will produce a map or program that is capable of performing universally in all environments and climates of which that vehicle will be sold in. For example, the VW Group sell vehicles world wide, into countries with varying humidity, temperatures, fuel qualities and emissions law. Therefore they develop a ‘one size fits all’ map, which works reliably with all these variables, even taking into consideration infrequent servicing and poor maintenance.
This therefore presents us the opportunity to tune the vehicle to be more efficient, in line with the UK’s climate as well as ensuring it is performing to its full potential. These are just some of the factors amongst many (such as engines shared across different models e.g VW polo and VW golf) which allow mapping to have a dramatic effect. The overall benefit of Remapping / Chip Tuning is unlocking the full potential of your vehicle from the restrictions placed within the ECU by manufactures. The improvements are not only the sheer BHP and Torque gains, but also in a sharper throttle response and a wider power band. The overall outcome is a more linear power delivery, making the vehicle more lively and a pleasure to drive.
After an ECU Remap, you shall enjoy:
Increased Horsepower – Increased Torque – Smoother Power Delivery
Improved Fuel Economy – DPF & EGR Solutions – Safer Overtaking

What is Chip Tuning or Vehicle Chipping? Chip Tuning and Remapping are essentially the same thing. Both refer to changing the software a vehicle runs on, to achieve better performance. Specifically, chip tuning refers to a method of tuning common in older vehicles, when removal of the vehicles Chip within the ECU is required. Once removed, we either program the old chip, or instal new chip with the adaptions in parameters required to improve performance. The performance and tuning options available are exactly the same as other tuning methods which we conduct, such as OBD Remapping and BDM Remapping.
